Writing Prompt #3: You always smile like you’re about to cry

“Where are you going?” questions the voice, cheerfully. I turn around, smiling.

“No where: just out,” I reply, voice smooth. A titled head, a small frown.

“Are you sure? What’s wrong?” I smile again, shaking my head.

“What do you mean? Nothing’s wrong!” I reply, easy laugh on my breath. A heavy sigh.

“Why? Why are you doing that?” My smile drops a little, a look of puzzlement on my face.

“Doing what?”

“Today…whenever you smile, it always looks like you’re about to cry.” I blink, then smile, and even I can feel the difference in it as I lean forward, gently brushing hair out of face.

“Maybe I’m going to cry from sheer happiness?” I suggest. A deep frown as this is considered, then a firm shake of the head.

“No: those aren’t happy tears.” I chuckles, shaking my head.

“Well, you’d certainly know best, wouldn’t you?” A sharp smack to the arm, and I chuckle.

“Alright, alright,” I yield. “I’m just…kind of sad today. And there are things I want to say, but I don’t know how to.” A deeper frown.

“What’s…what’s wrong?” I shake my head.

“Nothing at all. I promise. But, I do need to go. I’ll be back later.” A sigh, a nod.

“Fine. Just…come back.”
